Sitting in meditation prior to practicing asana can be supportive of an asana practice because it can create softness and space, receptivity, and even generosity of heart as specifics melt away and all that is experienced becomes enveloped in the kindness that permeates spaciousness. (Sometimes, of course, the reverse is true as practicing asana first settles your mind so sitting is a bit more easeful and relaxed).

My Open Awareness guided meditation might be an interesting and helpful pre-asana practice. Open awareness can create softness and space, receptivity, and even generosity of heart as specifics melt away and all that is experienced becomes enveloped in the kindness that permeates spaciousness.

Thoughts, opinions, and any contractions around what we want and don’t want and criticism of ourselves, our bodies, and each other can deliciously melt away. What is left? An open-hearted curiosity to what is, as whatever it is shifts and changes, arises and passes away, moment to moment. By not holding on to fixed views the heart delights, the body relaxes, and the mind widens its views.
